Prevention

Although 16-19 year-olds are the most common age group to experience car accidents, the accidents can be prevented and/or decreased by gaining more knowledge and basic driving skills.

Distractions are one of the biggest causes behind teen crashes. Cellphones and friends in the car with you are some of the biggest distractions facing teen drivers. By limiting cellphone use to only with emergencies and by pulling over to make the call or text can reduce the percentage of teen cellphone use while operating a vehicle. It is also encouraged that for the first year of having your license to drive with no passengers, until you've gained the proper amount of driving skills (Car Accident Prevention 2018). It's also helpful to talk to your friends in the car with you about what they can do to help limit the amount of distractions in the car setting.

Speeding is another factor that a lot of young drivers don't pay close attention to. Speed limits are set in place for your own safety and they are placed where they are for the current road conditions in that specific area. Driving over the set speed limit could be very dangerous for you and other people. Driving under the speed limit may be necessary in certain conditions as well. Young drivers need to pay closer attention to their surrounding while driving because their reaction time to avoid hazardous conditions is slower then those of more experience drivers.
